The provincial government’s bailout of the Bas Caraquet shipyard on the Acadian Peninsula is raising questions about whether taxpayer dollars will be protected.
The Minister responsible for the Regional Economic Development Corporation Victor Boudreau says the opposition Conservatives had no problem subsidising the port of Saint John to the tune of 68 million dollars in taxpayer money with no strings attached.
Fredericton-York M-L-A Kirk MacDonald says it’s unlikely the port of Saint John will go belly up.
MacDonald is comparing the shipyard bailout to the loan guarantees granted Atcon and Atlantic Co-op before they declared bankruptcy.
Boudreau responded by pointing to the cost overruns at Point Lepreau which the Alward Government failed to recover and were 20 times worse than Atcon.
