Senator John Wallace, who’s sitting as an independent, is looking forward to the day when the Liberals and Conservatives cease to have a stranglehold on the Senate.
Wallace says the Senate, during his 7 years as a Senator, has not been doing its job of being a check on the excesses of the House of Commons, pointing out during his time as a senator, 165 bills have come from the House of Commons for approval in the Senate and only two have been changed.
As for how fast change can come about, Wallace points out the Conservatives still control the Senate and their receptivity to change has been begrudging to date.
Wallace says by the end of 2017, non-partisan senators without an axe to grind will outnumber Liberal and Conservative senators.
