A lawsuit resulting from sexual abuse perpetrated by Kenneth Estabrooks, who was a Saint John Police officer before being transferred to City Works, is moving right along.
A hearing will be held in July to determine whether claims by the people who say they were abused by Estabrooks should be allowed to proceed as a class action lawsuit.
Halifax lawyer John McKiggan says the lawsuit is about whether the city bears any responsibility for the abuse that took place. Estabrooks was transferred to the works department after the sexual abuse became known but wasn’t prosecuted at the time.
McKiggan says the claims of abuse are validated, the city could be on the hook for tens of millions of dollars.
