Speeding in the school zone by St. Stephen High School is causing concern within the town.
With the new crosswalk now in place between the school and the new Irving, many are worried about speeders not slowing down in time for students.
Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of St. Stephen, Derek O’Brien says it concerned the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure as well, in getting their approval for the exact location of the crosswalk, “Because they want cars, even cars coming around the traffic circle very rapidly, to have the time to slow down before the crosswalk. And the same with them coming from over the hill from Old Ridge to make sure that they are slowing down in time.”
O’Brien says the RCMP were engaged last week with their speed sign, warning drivers of how fast they are driving in the school zone, which is 30 kms/hour.
He says the RCMP have also promised to give an increased presence in the area, especially over the next few weeks, until drivers get used to the new crosswalk.
