The Saint John Mill Rats are embarking on a new four week pilot project called “Basketball and Books”. The aim is to get young people from low income families into the habits of reading books and playing basketball.
Carol Kelly of the Mill Rats says students at Centennial and those who would have gone to St. Patrick’s will receive sneakers, Steve Nash basketball equipment together with reading. Kelly says the program could be expanded to other schools next year.
The Mill Rats are doing this with the school district, the “Y” and the PALS program.
Meantime, young people 12 and under will be able to see the Mill Rats play tomorrow night and Saturday free of charge at Harbour Station.
