With the tax deadline imminent the New Brunswick RCMP has issued a warning that the Canada Revenue Agency phone scam has returned with New Brunswickers being targeted by fraudsters.
Here’s what to look out for according to the Mounties: they will pretend to be a CRA employee and say that you owe overdue taxes and are aggressive, often saying you could be arrested if the money isn’t paid right away. Police say the callers speak with a foreign accent and insist that the money be paid through either credit card or Western Union. As well, in some cases they use a program to show the number of either the CRA or the police on your caller ID.
Police say if you think a scammer is caller, hang up right away and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. You should notify police if you have been a victim of fraud either by giving up personal information or cooperating with the callers in some other way.
