Local snowmobilers will be able to drive into the downtown core this coming winter.
St. Stephen Town Council approving the request by the St. Croix Ridgerunners Snowmobile Club to use their snowmobiles on the walking trail from Prince William Street to Budd Avenue during the winter months.
St. Stephen Chief Administrative Officer Derek O’Brien says it’s only a small portion of trail because that’s the only part the Town owns. “They’ll be using the trail that they have created and they have permission to use elsewhere, but the portion they were asking for was actually just the small portion within town limits.”
The Club has agreed to provide signage for the trail as required by the Town of St. Stephen, and any snowmobiler who uses the trail must carry public liability insurance of at least one million dollars.
O’Brien agrees this could bring good economic spinoffs in the downtown core as well, “They (the club) said they’d really like the opportunity. I think they’ve seen that happen in other municipalities and other areas of the province, where people can pull their snowmobiles right into the downtown core.
