NB Power is working toward a smart grid system which will better manage the supply and delivery of electricity to its customers.
President and CEO Gaetan Thomas says ideally the Crown corporation needs to utilize three key sources for power – nuclear, hydroelectric and renewable energy such as wind, solar or bio-mass.
“Smart grid is really a foundation to allow more renewables (green energy sources), nuclear and hydroelectric to co-exist and ensure there is reliable power in the future,” notes Thomas.
Although efforts are underway to rely more on renewable energy, Thomas says we are still many years away from not needing fossil fuels as our main source of energy.
