Common Council has a lot on its plate tonight even though it’s the final meeting before next Tuesday’s municipal election.
Councillors will vote on whether to proceed with asking the provincial government to rescind the L-N-G tax concession.
Norm McFarlane was mayor when Common Council approved the tax concession guaranteeing the city half a million dollars a year for 25 years.
He doesn’t think rescinding the tax concession would be the best move the city could make.
McFarlane points out the city would wind up with no tax revenue at all if, for whatever reason, the L-N-G terminal was mothballed and the unconditional grant the city receives each year from the province could be lowered. He says there is now less activity at Canaport than there had been.
