Siblings from Saint John are safe after a harrowing time trying to get out of Fort McMurray.
Nick Bonner was heading back from a vacation when heard of the evacuation and that his sister Kendra had to get out.
He flew into Edmonton and kept driving to meet his sister Kendra who was safe in Smoky Lake.
Kendra tells us the evacuation went from voluntary to mandatory very quickly.
She says you could see flames on the hill driving out of town and ashes were falling down around them.
Nick Bonner tells us he heard today that all structure fires in Fort Mac were extinguished but more threats remain.
He says there is a very real threat of the other half of the city going up in flames today with the high temperatures, low humidity and wind gusts.
It’s 30 degrees in Fort McMurray and a special air quality statement is in effect relating to the smoke from the wildfire.
