Will you cast a ballot on May 9th?
Advance polls were up across the province as compared to 2012.
Assistant Professor in Politics and International Relations at Mount Allison University Geoff Martin says it helps when you have active candidates, who put and signs and go door to door.
He says, “Competition also helps, if you have a couple of contrasting candidates, then they will come out and vote for one of the other.”
In 2012, only 33 per cent of voters in Greater Moncton cast ballots.
He says there may be a perception among the public that municipal government is not that important, maybe because of the absence of political parties, and being unsure what people stand for.
He feels there may also be a kind of cynicism that people don’t think their vote means anything, and that things don’t change on council.
