Officials expect it’s going to be a volatile situation in Fort McMurray for some time.
A wildfire that’s forced the evacuation of thousands of residents is showing no signs of slowing down in its second week, having grown to over 200 thousand hectares.
At a media briefing this weekend, Chad Morrison from Alberta Wildfire said the fight in the forested area could go on for months, noting that’s not uncommon for a fire of its size.
Alberta Emergency Management adds they’re not looking at months to get evacuees back into their homes, as re-entry planning has already started.
Meanwhile, the Alberta government is rolling out support services.
Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee vows there’s help for people who need to do things like fill a medical prescription, or get their kids back to class on Monday morning.
