Saint John’s current councillor-at-large may be experiencing deja-vu as she has been elected the city’s deputy mayor for the second time in her political career.
Shirley McAlary received over 11,000 in Monday’s municipal election getting over 5000 votes above the second place Gary Sullivan who was elected councillor-at-large.
McAlary says we have to move the city forward by sticking to our priorities.
“This new council will have to very soon, you know, work together and bring those priorities to an agreement that we all will be involved in and will want to work together on,” says McAlary, who also hopes they can bring the council together and work as a team, saying they had a very good team over the last four years.
As for what she attributes her win to, she says she has always been accessible and that she does her best to understand the people of Saint John.
McAlary was elected as deputy mayor in 1992 and was elected mayor in 1995 and served in that rol euntil 2004. She says she is willing to help out mayor-elect Don Darling.
The new mayor and council will be sworn in on May 24 and the first council meeting will be on May 30.
