108 nursing home beds in Saint John and Fredericton, originally designated for Alzheimer patients, will be converted instead to nursing home beds.
Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers says 72 of them will be at Shannex on Millidge Avenue.
Rogers says the provincial government has a long term strategy on aging, the goal of which is to eventually move the patients who are in hospitals but don’t need to be there into other settings for care.
Shannex has hired 20 additional staff members in Fredericton and is in the process of hiring from 80 to 100 new employees in Saint John as a result of this initiative.
