While your risk of getting Lyme disease in New Brunswick is low, the provincial Department of Health is still warning you to take precautions to avoid being bitten by an infected blacklegged tick.
Here are some things the department says you can do to protect yourself if you’re spending time outside in the woods or in bushy areas: walk in the middle of trails, make sure you’re wearing clothing that covers your skin and is light-coloured so that ticks are easier to see, use bug repellent, and do full body checks for ticks on yourself your kids and your pets after you come back.
It’s described as an emerging illness in New Brunswick and other parts of Canada. It’s treatable with antibiotics when diagnosed at the early stages so if you feel flu-ish or have a bull’s eye rash after being bitten by a tick your’e advised to go see a doctor.
