The people who live along Sand Cove Road appear to be skeptical whether the installation of two relief wells will do much of anything to prevent further slope failure.
Part of the road is down to one lane and some properties have sustained damage.
Mort McAllister has lived along Sand Cove Road for a long time and says this isn’t the first time land has given way. Part of Holy Cross Cemetary gave way in the early 80’s. Fill was brought in and rocks were placed on the beach and the land has remained stable ever since.
The other breakwater was put up in the corner of McLaren’s Beach in the 1970’s and the land behind the rocks hasn’t moved since
The relief wells are costing the city 158 thousand dollars and McAllister fears it’s a waste of money. He also fears what might happen if the next winter is a harsh one. A permanent solution won’t be done until sometime next year because the city doesn’t have the money this year.
