A pilot project will be looking at ways to educate students around the importance of healthy living, with the goal of lowering the child obesity rate in New Brunswick.
The Heart & Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick will be conducting the project and VP of Communications Donna Gates calls the amount of obese children in the province an “epidemic”, and says the numbers are “scary”.
Gates says students need to think about things like how much water they’re drinking, how much activity they’re getting and she says they’re looking at rewarding schools who educate their students really well.
Gates says 1 in 3 Canadian children are overweight and says 28 per cent of youth between the ages of 14-17 in New Brunswick are considered obese.
