A young boy who climbed into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo is doing well according to a statement from his family.
Police are now investigating the family after zoo officials decided to kill the gorilla to save the toddler.
Magnetic Hill Zoo Manager Bruce Dougan says the situation is unfortunate but it was the right thing to do.
“In my opinion at that time, it was the only decision they could make to save that child,” he says.
Dougan notes a tranquilizer was not an option since it would take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to work in a calm animal.
In this case, the gorilla was already distressed and he adds it would take even longer.
