Bed bugs have been a problem in Saint John for years now to such an extent that there’s a website to report outbreaks in New Brunswick. Some Syrian families who have been settled in Crescent Valley have complained about bed bugs.
According to the bed bug registry, it has received 9 reports of bed bugs in various parts of the city.
Back in 2010, St. Josephs Hospital had an outbreak and two years ago a Saint John family of five in Crescent Valley set up a tent and lived in it for a time because of an infestation in their townhouse.
The provincial government warns bedbugs can be carried into your home on used furniture, especially mattresses, armchairs and sofas. It advises people to be cautious about taking in second-hand furniture, used mattresses or used clothing.
The province is also telling people who live in public housing to Immediately call their local office of the Department of Social Development when bedbugs are spotted.
