ONE Change is the recipient of $23,563 from the 100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John.
Executive Director of the grassroots organization in the north end Barry Galloway says one of the things they’ve been working on for a couple of years is a playpark. He says they have an empty parking lot next to the Nick Nicolle Community Centre, which has been donated to them, and they already have all the equipment in the city.
“We need to install a rubber surface for the playpark, some fencing and lighting, and so this is going to go a long way to help make that happen,” says Galloway. “And with a couple of other partners on board we’re hoping to have it in place by the end of the summer.”
Galloway says in 2006 the north end had the highest crime rate in Saint John as compared to this year when it has the lowest rate.
“I think that it is because residents and churches and partners have come together and we all want the same things, so we’re all working in the same direction.”
The other groups that presented at the latest meeting of 100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John were Bobby’s Hospice and the KV Oasis Youth Centre. As of this latest meeting the 100 Women Who Care have donated $319,959 to community charities.
