The 100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John marked two major milestones at its latest meeting on Tuesday.
The organization has been in operation for three years now and has raised well over $300,000 for local charities. The Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue League was the first charity the group donated to and co-founder Debbie Rathwell says now that three years have passed they’re able to be nominated again.
“We’ve really come full circle because when they won, that just seems like yesterday that we were all sobbing because Melody was telling us these stories about these vulnerable animals,” says Rathwell. “Who would have thought that we’ve come this far this fast and be so successful.”
The way that it works is that each member commits $100 four times a year and meetings are done in an hour or less. Rathwell says they’re effective and efficient and these are the ingredients for the recipe of their success.
“I’ve had some chats with some ladies in Grand Manan and in the Miramichi that are looking at trying to build their organizations. It’s a very grassroots movement and we’re all there for each other.”
ONE Change is the most recent recipient getting just over $23K from the group. That brings their total donations so far to $319,959.
