The New Brunswick Literacy Secretariat has released a report called “The Power of Literacy”.
The report has been handed to the Gallant government with 37 recommendations to improve literacy rates and foster a culture of lifelong learning.
Secretariat co-chair Marilyn Trenholme Counsell says the early years of a child’s life are the most important for learning.
“From birth and some would say even at conception until age five… We can say the first year or the first three years or the first five depending on what your parameters are. But those early years are key,” says Trenholme Counsel.
The recommendations are expected to be instrumental in developing a comprehensive literacy strategy for New Brunswick.
Premier Brian Gallant created the Secretariat last year to help improve the province’s literacy challenges.
