The federal government will be investing more than $300,000 to help SCG Industries develop new technology at the landfill here in Saint John.
SCG President Michael Campbell says a lot of moisture builds up during the disposal of waste at the landfill and the new technology will act as a vacuum to extract the moisture better then the current pumping system.
Campbell says facilities that burn methane and produce energy already produce a vacuum, so this new technology is just harnessing the already existing vacuum technology to extract the leachate at no additional cost.
He says the new vacuum system will allow for more green energy to go to the electrical grid and reduce greenhouse gases.
Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long was on hand to make the announcement.
Long calls the project a “game-changer” that will lead to an improved environment for us all and employ more people here in Saint John.
Crane Mountain Landfill General Manager Marc MacLeod says a ten-percent increase would mean free fuel and an extra $25,000 annually for the landfill.
MacLeod says a 50-percent increase would bring in an additional $100,000 to the landfill annually.
The Fundy Regional Service Commission will contribute over $50,000 to the project as well, and SCG Industries will provide over $80,000.
