Premier Brian Gallant seems optimistic the Trudeau government will appoint a judge from the Atlantic region to the Supreme Court of Canada at some point in their mandate.
A few eyebrows were raised recently when Prime Minister Trudeau said there was no guarantee his government would appoint another judge from the region when a vacancy arises next month.
Gallant believes if an appointment doesn’t come now, it will come later.
“I think that Prime Minister Trudeau said it well, there are many factors they have to consider and we understand that,” he notes.
The four Progressive Conservative leaders in Atlantic Canada say the Trudeau government is sending dangerous messages by suggesting the region is not deserving of the same representation as the rest of Canada and that there are no litigators or judges worthy of consideration.
