The countdown is on after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued their 72 hour strike notice.
The union will be in a legal position to commence strike action on Sunday.
This comes after Canada Post refused to agree to a 24 hour extension proposed by the government.
Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour MaryAnn Mihychuk announced she will be appointing a special mediator to assist in negotiations between both sides.
Canada Post say they will cooperate in the process.
It is hoped the assistance of a neutral third party will help both sides address the real challenges facing the postal service – like declining mail volumes, and increasing pension obligations.
