Having the federal minister for Social Development in Saint John for a day and a half getting a close-up view of poverty means he’ll have a much richer understanding of the city.
Saint John will be the first of six cities to host an in-depth poverty assessment as announced by Famillies Minister Jean-Yves Duclos.
Randy Hatfield of the Human Development Council says it’s taken a lot to get poverty on the radar screen.
Hatfield says we have learned about in Saint John over the years about poverty and income inadequacy being connected to an underperforming economy and lost human potential.
Hatfield says he thinks the business community has a done great job of informing itself on the root causes of poverty.
