A provincial adult literacy group is urging New Brunswickers to think about books and reading today as we celebrate International Literacy Day.
Laubach Literacy New Brunswick has volunteers around the province who help adults improve their literacy skills through a free, confidential tutoring program.
Executive Director Deanna Allen says this day was set aside by UNESCO more than 40 years ago to talk about the importance of literacy for everybody of all ages.
“Of course it’s important every day but it warrants a day that is special just for International Literacy Day because it affects so many people worldwide,” she notes.
Allen says says a love of learning and a love of reading helps people in so many ways including reducing stress and boosting mental concentration and agility levels.
