The Greater Moncton SPCA says it hasn’t received any calls as of yet, after the approval of a pitbull ban by-law in Montreal.
The by-law was passed by Montreal City Council on Tuesday it goes into effect on October 3rd.
Executive Director Dave Rogers says they’re ready to take some of those dogs, if they have room at the shelter, “If they reach out to us, we will discuss and negotiate with them. What our concern is, we certainly don’t want to take on unadoptable animals.”
Rogers says they want to stress that the Greater Moncton SPCA does not support this breed specific ban. He says, “Not all pitbulls are bad. Pitbulls are some of the most docile animals in the world. The restrictions that are placed on these owners, they may have no choice financially or otherwise, but to surrender their animal. If they are surrendered to the SPCA in Montreal, that’s when we anticipate we will start to receive calls, asking if we would be willing to shelter it and find it a home.”
He admits there are some villages in the province of New Brunswick who have these types of bans, but he wouldn’t specify which ones.
As for the by-law in Montreal, the SPCA in that city plans to take legal action, and will ask the Quebec Superior Court to review it.
