With the move to offer french immersion to an earlier grade, Education Minister Brian Kenny says this will help promote bilingualism in our province in the long run.
Minister Kenny says he has two children who have graduated through the school system, who were in French immersion and it is really helping them here in the province to be bilingual.
“I think we have an opportunity, it’s going to take some time to do it, but that’s what we’re doing as a government to be able to improve our education system for all,” says Kenny.
The Liberal government announced yesterday early French immersion will return to grade 1 starting in the next school year.
Kenny says the grade 3 entry point will remain in place until 2019 but at that point it will be eliminated and the students will be grandfathered in through to grade 12.
The government will also add another 80 to 90 schools across the province that will offer french immersion.
Kenny says work on the new curriculum is underway and information will be available soon.
