Saying it strives for transparent communication and accountability, Cherry Brook Zoo is asking the city for a contribution next year of at least 60 thousand dollars.
The zoo was embroiled in controversy in July with the sudden departure of Len and Lynda Collrin with the Board of Directors silent until engaging a law firm in the city. City Police were asked to investigate whether there were any financial irregularities and the Collrins sued for wrongful dismissal.
The Board of Directors includes former Mayor Norm McFarlane and former councillor Bill Farren. It says more supporters have come on board over the last couple of months.
The zoo says it needs city money in order to be accredited and to help pay for upgrades to the animal enclosures and buildings which were deferred. The budget forecast estimates the cost of running the zoo next year will be over 390 thousand dollars.
