Hurricane Matthew is now ripping across Haiti as a Category 4 storm, but we still don’t know for sure if it will impact the Maritimes.
Meteorologist with Environment Canada, Linda Libby says the track shows Hurricane Matthew weakening as it moves north through the Bahamas, but it could strengthen over warmer waters.
“Depending on the track, it could take it over the Gulf Stream which is warm, or over colder water, or bring it closer to the US east coast, and maybe bring it inland and possibly weaken it. Certainly if it takes a ride into North Carolina / South Carolina, somewhere in there, that’s going to have an impact on Matthew and it may not even make it into Canada.”
Libby says right now is a good time to review your emergency plan incase of a power outage, and make sure you have food and water.
She says everyone should also consider changing their holiday plans over the long weekend, or not travelling too far from home, because if Matthew does hit the Maritimes, it will be over the Thanksgiving weekend.
