21 year old Danielle McArthur was one of 26 who were celebrated this week, as Portage Atlantic held its 20 year anniversary.
The New Brunswick drug addiction recovery clinic helped her to get her life back on track.
McArthur says, “I started drinking in middle schools and that lead to hard drugs. I moved out on my own when I was 16. I lost my apartment, and I couldn’t keep a job.”
That was Danielle’s story last year, but now after leaving Portage Atlantic in July. She has secured a full time job and found a place of her own, her first week back to work. She was given the employee of the week award.
She says others who were also in the program were extremely supportive, and a lot of the workers there are also recovered addicts.
Her advice to others who may be going through this, “Just stick it out and do it. It’s going to be really hard at first, but once you get used to it, it gets easier. Do it before it’s too late because you don’t always get a second chance. When you’re in your addiction you don’t always make it.”
