The contractor who was operating the excavator which crashed through the covered bridge at the end of the French Village Road was taken to hospital as a precaution according to the provincial Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
The excavator broke through the Hammond River bridge decking on Wednesday morning with a load of timber and went down an embankment. The department is currently working a plan to remove the excavator.
DOT was carrying out repairs at the time and had closed the historic bridge, which was built in 1912, to finish them.
We’re told WorkSafe NB, the provincial Department of Environment and the federal department of Fisheries and Oceans have all been notified of the incident.
“Safety and security on worksites is a priority for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and staff will be working closely to assist WorkSafeNB investigators looking into this accident,” reads a statement sent to our newsroom.
