The New Brunswick Student Alliance believes that private colleges and universities should not be included in the province’s free tuition program TAB – the Tuition Access Bursary.
Executive director Robert Burroughs says this is not a case of public versus private students but an instance where the province must hold private institutions accountable to the same standards as public schools.
Burroughs says including private institutions would not mean greater access for all students.
“What it would mean is that the existing monies would have to be spread thin and what that will actually do is limit access instead of increasing access,” he notes.
Burroughs also wants to see a sliding scale for the TAB program so public students from families over the current threshold of $60,000 would still be eligible for at least some of their education being paid for.
