Saint Andrews will be getting some well overdue upgrades.
The provincial and federal governments announcing $134,685 in joint funding for the project, which includes sewer separation and upgrades to the town’s water system.
Mayor Doug Naish says the pipes in the older sections of town really need to be sorted out, “Years and years ago, they just did not have the engineering expertise that we now have to sort out where storm water should go, where sanitary sewer lines should go. Often times we’ve found, by trial and error, that pipes were connected up in exactly the wrong configuration.”
Naish says sewer backups and flooding issues have caused a lot of heartache for residents over the years.
He says this project is essential, not just for sewer, but especially now that we are dealing with climate change, rising sea levels, and extreme flooding events.
He says its estimated some of the pipes are around 75 years old, and some are older than that as excavation work turned up wooden pipes last year. Naish says he has no idea how old the wooden pipes would be.
