A historical discovery during renovations at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre.
Two time capsules, with their contents intact.
The capsules were found in two cornerstones on the building. The first, from the original, built back in 1897. Years later that building burned down, and another was erected in 1916.
Heritage and Culture Coordinator for Resurgo Place Lawren Campbell told us what they found inside, “Things like newspapers, annual reports from the city, stamps, currency, that kind of thing.”
Campbell says the items were very well preserved, “Unbelievable, the newspapers fell open. Usually if it is paper, you try to open it , and you’ll hear cracking, and the paper will disintegrate. We could actually flip them open and see the dates on some of them.”
So what happens to the artifacts now? Campbell says, the owner of the building owns everything in the building, “So Aberdeen owns them. We had a quick discussion, and they said they wanted to display them for the anniversary celebrations, but they want the museum to own them and take care of them from this point forward.”
He says, that way they can be enjoyed by future generations as well.
