Common Council voted unanimously in favour to ask the Taxi Advisory Committee to report to council regarding some issues involving the six month old taxi bylaw.
Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary put the motion forward because of apparent flaws in the wording of the bylaw that has led to some cab drivers charging whatever price they want.
She says the wording of the bylaw doesn’t allow city police to enforce it either.
Councillor Ray Strowbridge says he won’t entertain the idea of taking the meters out of cabs, but he does support tweaking the wording of the bylaw. He calls the bylaw “a complete waste of time” and “scary”, if it were written in a way that police can’t enforce it.
Councillor Donna Reardon says common council has heard a lot of anecdotal evidence. She says she just wants a fair and transparent cab industry that’s based on some real data.
Mayor Don Darling says the Taxi Advisory Committee will give council an update to see if there’s any gaps and to see if they have recommendations to make it better.
Darling hopes to have them present to council before the end of November.
