Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary isn’t happy with the way the metered taxi service is working these days.
McAlary bases her criticism on the complaints she’s receiving and has come to the conclusion it’s not working well.
The Deputy Mayor claims Saint Johnners who are making ends meet on low incomes are having the most difficult time paying the increase in metered fares. She argues, a taxi is sometimes their only way to travel because the Transit system does not and can not fit their schedule.
The other major issue, according to the Deputy Mayor, is apparent flaws in the wording of the bylaw that have caused cab drivers or at least some of the to charge whatever they see fit.
McAlary maintains City Police have not been able to enforce the new taxi bylaw because of how it’s worded.
