The Common Front for Social Justice is raising awareness today, of the number of people living in poverty across our province.
Around 100, 000 people in New Brunswick are living in poverty, that statistic is being revealed today, on the International Day for the Eradication of poverty.
Chairperson Marilyn Riel says a large number of those living in poverty are living in seclusion, because they are embarrassed and are afraid of being judged, “People living in poverty will live in a secret world. I lived in poverty all my life and I never wanted anyone to know.”
Riel say many of the people are the working poor, who are earning a minimum wage. They are forced to rely on the food bank to feed their families, even though they are working full time, “I can name three people right now, in my family that live in poverty, that are working everyday. I go to the food bank for them, because they are working. We also have people living in tents, who are homeless. Some people live in a rut, and they think there is no way out.”
