Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary doubts repealing the tax break granted to Canaport LNG will make other companies think twice before they do business with Saint John.
McAlary says the process will take some time after the tax bills come out in March of 2017.
She says the property owners then have thirty days to appeal, which could take several months, and then another appeal could be issued.
McAlary says that’s why the province will set aside any additional money into a trust account, so it’s not paid out to Saint John, and the other municipalities until any appeal is resolved.
She says the city hasn’t made any tax deals for anyone else in the city and questions why they would do it for the LNG properties.
McAlary introduced the motion at common council to repeal the LNG tax concession.
