Wait times for knee replacement surgery in the Moncton area are some of the longest in Canada, according to Dr. Mike Forsythe, an Orthopaedic surgeon in the Hub City, “Currently, about 680 days wait in the Moncton area, both at Moncton Hospital and the George Dumont, for knee replacement surgery, which is much longer than the national average which is about 180 days or six months, and certainly a lot longer than in other parts in the province.”
He says, “There are currently over 600 patients waiting for knee replacement surgeries at the Moncton Hospital alone, and we need to come up with a solution to deal with the increasing demand with is over 300 per cent over the last ten years.”
Dr. Forsythe says the reason behind the wait times is a lack of resources, particularly Operating room time and a lack of beds.
He says presently they are working locally and provincially to try and come up with some resources and solutions to the wait lists.
