The vote is in on the proposed multipurpose facility in the Hampton region and most people in the five local service districts in the area are in favour of a slight increase in their property tax rate of 3 cents per 100 dollars of assessment. That would work out to a yearly tax hike of 45 dollars if your home is assessed at $150 thousand.
The final vote tally was 610 in favour and 425 against. Of the 5 local service districts, only Kingston voted no. The provincial government has warned people in those areas voting no will be subject to paying user fees.
Now that the community has voiced its support for a $19 million multipurpose facility in Hampton, the next step is to get both the federal and provincial governments on board. Al Walker of the Hampton Regional Leisure Services Committee says it would be located immediately behind the existing rink.
The new facility would have a larger ice surface than the existing rink with room for more than 600 spectators. There would also be a library, walking track and community roons that could be rented out.
