You’ll start to notice more people wearing a poppy on their coats from now on as the poppy campaign has officially been launched.
Larry Lynch of the Branch 69 Legion says the donations from the poppies are mainly to promote respect and dignity for veterans who are in financial need.
“It could be something for heat, anything at all,” says Lynch. “Our branch, to give you an idea, last year we gave over $6000 to local veterans in the area here that needed some help.”
Lynch tells us after the campaign ends the leftover money goes towards the general community for things like Hospice and Meals of Wheels. He points out that the poppies are not sold, it’s by donation only. We asked him where you can get them.
“In a lot of the malls around the city, legion people are out with the poppies to make them available to the people,” says Lynch.
The red and white poppy flag is now flying high in front of city hall, after a flag-raising at noon.

On Saturday at 10am they’re getting people to come out to the Cedar Hill Field of Honour on the city’s west side where they will be placing about 3000 Canadian flags on every veteran’s grave.
