Common Council will be talking water tonight which includes an update on the safe drinking water project. Councillors have been told there have been no major problems with the clean drinking water project thus far. It’s on schedule and on budget with just minor soil contamination found during construction.
The flat charge next year for water and sewage next year will go up to almost 13 hundred dollars, an increase of 72 dollars. Council has also been told it’s challenging to keep rates affordable because of the costs of Harbour cleanup and the safe drinking water project but Saint John is ahead of other cities.
Saint John Water will wind up the year with a surplus of $233 thousand.
The city is expected to finish with a surplus of $1.1 million which is less than 1 per cent of its total budget.
