Today is National Certified Diabetes Educator Day with the purpose honouring the important work carried out by diabetes educators.
Shelley Jones has been a nurse for 35 years and decided to become a certified diabetes educator after working in the primary care unit.
Jones says she saw the positive impact she could make by sharing her knowledge and helping people learn the skills they need to manager their diabetes.
Roughly 33 percent of people in New Brunswick are living with diabetes, or pre-diabetes.
Jones says it’s not something that people cause to happen, but they can speed up up the process with poor lifestyle choices.
She says today is about promoting physical activity and a healthy diet.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month.
