We need more straight talk and less spin when it comes to the provincial government’s finances. That word coming from provincial Progressive Conservative leader Blaine Higgs in his reply to the Speech from the Throne. He points out since Brian Gallant became Premier, the province’s net debt has risen by 2 billion dollars or 17 per cent which represents the greatest year over year increase in New Brunswick’s history.
As for getting people back to work, Higgs is suggesting we look at what’s being done elsewhere to attract long term jobs and not ones that are here because of a government subsidy or road contract.
Higgs says there are three big challenges facing the province……..How to attract more private investment, encouraging new ideas and not sutting out people who come forward with them and student achievement, arguing the recent education assessments should be a wake up call to all New Brunswickers.
He criticised the Gallant Government on tourism for not providing the funding necessary for connector roads that would link the Fundy Trail to Fundy National Park.
