A lobby group says the additional passenger train service that VIA Rail is offering in the Maritimes during the upcoming holiday season is good news but the problem is it’s not a sustained effort.
Transport Action Atlantic president Ted Bartlett says even though the additional six trains are being heavily promoted, travellers don’t normally consider rail.
Bartlett says travellers in this region simply aren’t used to having passenger rail on a regular basis so it’s not considered as a first option.
He says many travellers are driving or arranging drives.
From December 18 until January 6, VIA Rail is offering 24 departures between Montreal and the Maritimes on the Ocean, six more than its regular schedule.
