The frenzied shopping day known as Black Friday which is held the day after American Thanksgiving has spilled north of the border in recent years.
Moneris, Canada’s largest processor of debit and credit cards, says retailers in this country have been embracing Black Friday.
Spokesperson Rob Cameron says Black Friday has now surpassed Boxing Day in terms of overall sales.
“For the last couple of years since 2014, it (Black Friday) has been in third place. Last year, Black Friday was 25 percent busier than Boxing Day,” he notes.
Cameron says Canada’s busiest shopping day of the year continues to be December 23.
He believes that day will be even busier this year since it falls on a Friday and many companies may close at noon and give their employees the afternoon off work.
