Saint John Common Council could be ringing in the new year with a pay increase.
Councillors will be talking about it tonight after an independent consulting firm reviewed the wages for the mayor and themselves.
Korn Ferry consultants are suggesting councillors receive just under $30,000 a year, which is an increase of roughly $10,000 annually.
The report also suggested an increase in pay for the mayor from roughly $57,000 dollars to $75,000.
Councillor Greg Norton says council agreed to a certain rate of pay, but would support a pay increase for the next council.
He says he didn’t run for growth of his own council salary, or the other councillor’s salaries who agreed to run during this mandate.
Norton says the motion comes at a very bad time because the city is financially strapped.
He suggests if councillors are looking for a wage increase that they look for another level of government.
