New Brunswick has signed a new co-operative agreement with Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario which will streamline regulations allowing longer tractor trailers to transport goods between the four provinces.
Often called road trains, long-combination vehicles or LCV’s are multiple, tandem trailers on one tractor truck which operate only on designated four-lane highways.
Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association executive director Jean-Marc Picard says the LCV’s operate differently than other tractor trailers.
“The long-combination vehicles… they are not following the typical rules of a normal truck. The speed limit is 90 km/h, dangerous goods – some provinces accept them while others don’t. The weight, the training and everything else,” he notes.
Some of the advantages include having one less tractor on the road, savings on fuel, better for the environment and one less driver on the road.
Picard adds that’s definitely a bonus given the severe shortage of truck drivers in the region.
